Cost of a Squarespace website: Squarespace,
set up so it
runs itself.

The cost of a Squarespace website is two numbers, and they stay separate. The platform handles hosting and updates. I handle the part it cannot: structure, content, search basics, and a handover that means you can run it alone.

Where is your site now?: Which one
sounds like yours?

Most Squarespace work starts from one of these. Pick the closest and see what I would do.

Build it, buy it

Pick a size,
add the rest.

Every build price is days × £400 and no VAT is charged, so any number here can be checked. Nothing is paid when you order. A deposit, paid by card once you agree the written scope, starts the work. The balance is invoiced when it is finished, or paid monthly over up to 6 months at £400 a month or more.

1Pick a size

Every size includes the structure, design from a theme, build and handover. The search basics are in it too: a title and description written for every page, the sitemap submitted, and analytics connected. The extra below is the keyword research behind them.

3After launch

Once the site is live it has two running costs, paid to different people.

Hosting · paid to Squarespace

From £12 a month for the Squarespace plan the site runs on (everything included).

Squarespace bills you for this directly, so it is not part of anything you pay me.

Looking after it · paid to me

Choose one. It is how changes and upkeep work once the site is live.

For a site that rarely needs changing. No monthly fee: ask when you need something and pay for the time it takes.

  • A price first for anything over an hour
  • Billed on the next invoice

Nothing to sign up to, and nothing to cancel.

For a site with a few changes most months.

4 hours × £75: three hours of changes, and one kept free for you, so you get a reply within 12 working hours.

  • Three hours of changes a month
  • A reply within 12 working hours

Three months minimum, then a month's notice to stop. Hours are for use that month and do not carry over.

For a site that changes all the time.

9 hours × £75: eight hours of changes, and one kept free for you, so you get a reply within 12 working hours.

  • Eight hours of changes a month
  • A monthly call about what is next
  • Room for a small new feature most months

Three months minimum, then a month's notice to stop. Hours are for use that month and do not carry over.

Monthly plans are invoiced on the 1st, with no VAT charged. See maintenance plans.

Is Squarespace the right call?: Right for a lot of sites,
wrong for some.

Squarespace is at its best when the people running the site want to change words and pictures and never think about hosting, plugins or updates. It is at its worst when a site needs to do something it was not built for.

Compare all four platforms
  • It fits when
  • You want to edit it yourself, without a developer
  • Nobody will look after updates
  • A service business or portfolio with a handful of pages
  • Something else fits when
  • It needs plugins or custom features. WordPress is the better start
  • The site is mostly a shop. Shopify is built for it

The other platforms

WordPress Wix Shopify
01 How much does a Squarespace website cost each month?

Squarespace's own plan is what you pay monthly, and you pay it to them rather than to me: their business plan is the usual one for a site with a shop on it. The build here is a one-off fixed price on top, and there is no hosting to buy from me because Squarespace is the host.

02 What is the cost of a Squarespace website?

Two numbers, kept separate. Building it is mine: from £600 at £400 a day, no VAT. Having it is Squarespace's, from £12 a month on your own account.

03 Will I be able to edit it myself?

That is the point of Squarespace. You get a written guide at handover, set up around the pages you will actually change.

04 Which Squarespace plan do I need?

Basic, at £12 a month on annual billing, for most sites. Core, at £17, if you sell, because it removes the store fee.

05 Do I need hosting from you?

No. Squarespace hosts the site and handles updates. Changes after launch are £75 an hour, or a monthly plan from £300 if there will be a lot of them.

06 Can I move off Squarespace later?

Yes, though not everything exports cleanly. If that might matter, say so at the start and it shapes how the site is built.

07 How long does it take?

A five page site is usually a few weeks from the written scope, and the scope gives you real dates rather than a range.

08 How do we pay?

Nothing is paid when you order. Once you agree the written scope, a deposit is invoiced and paid by card, and that starts the work. The balance is invoiced when the site is finished, or paid monthly by Direct Debit over up to six months at £400 a month or more. Monthly costs nothing extra: no interest, and no VAT charged.

09 What happens after launch?

You get the logins and a written guide to the everyday changes. Looking after it is optional: changes are £75 an hour, or a monthly plan if there will be a lot of them.

The other platforms: Not sure Squarespace
is the one?

The same work on the other three, priced the same way, and a custom build for the jobs none of the four can do. Pick the one that suits whoever will run the site.
