Website design cost, UK: The platform
your team can run.
Small business website design in the UK, on four platforms. I build on whichever one suits the people who will keep the site running, not the one I enjoy most. The cost of a website depends mostly on which one, so here is who each suits, what it costs to build, and what it costs to run.

Average cost of website design for a small business, UK: What a website
design costs.
01 How much does website design cost?
Between £600 and £3,200 here, depending on the platform and how many pages you need. The cost of website development is worked out the same way on all four: days of work at £400 a day, with no VAT charged. A five page site is £1,200 on Squarespace or Wix and £1,600 on WordPress, which takes longer to set up.
02 Is there a website design cost calculator?
Not here, and you should not need one. A calculator is usually a way of not printing a price: you answer six questions and it emails you a range. Every price on this page is already the price, worked out as days of work at £400 a day, so you can add up the one you want without giving anybody your email address.
03 What is the average website design cost?
There is no average worth quoting: the ranges you find online are wide enough to include almost anything, and the same site costs different amounts on different platforms. What moves the number is how many pages there are, whether you are selling, and who writes the words. Ask what days of work sit behind a quote, and two quotes become comparable.
04 What should a small business website design price include?
It should cost what the work takes, and it should cover the whole job. Small business website design services differ a lot in what they include, so two quotes are only comparable once you know what each one leaves out. Every package here has the page structure, your real content loaded in, the search basics, a written handover and a training session in it.
05 What does website design cost UK wide, and what else do you pay?
Most of it is priced by the day, so the day rate is the thing to compare, and mine is £400 with no VAT charged. Small business website design in the UK comes with a second bill that is not mine: Squarespace, Wix and Shopify charge you a monthly plan, and a WordPress site needs hosting, £50 a month from me with the updates, backups and monitoring in it. I work from Milton Keynes, with businesses anywhere in the UK.
Website design by platform: Which one
sounds like you?
Most people already know how they want to run the site, even before they have picked a platform. Start from that.
“It needs to grow with the business.”
WordPress. For sites that will grow or need plugins. I host it and keep it updated, and the domain stays in your name.
WordPress packages“I will edit it myself, and never think about updates.”
Squarespace. The platform handles hosting and updates; you handle the words.
Squarespace packages“Bookings and a small shop, one login.”
Wix. More built in than anything else here. The trade is that a Wix site stays on Wix.
Wix packages“It is mostly a shop.”
Shopify. Built for selling, with payments, stock and shipping in one place.
Shopify packages“We already have a site. Why is nobody finding it?”
An SEO audit. A fixed-price look at what search engines can reach, what slows the pages, and what to fix first.
SEO audits WordPress, Squarespace, Wix or Shopify?: The differences
that matter.
Running costs are the cheapest plan that does the job, from each platform's own pricing page.
Running costs are per month on annual billing, checked September 2026. Wix only shows prices in US dollars. Platforms reprice often.
Pick it for whoever runs it,
not whoever builds it.
Redesign or move an existing site: Already on
something else?
Tell me where the site lives. Some platforms I will work in and some I will point you elsewhere for, and you will know which on the first call rather than halfway through a project.
Ask about your platform- Framer, Showit, WordPress.com, Square Online or Ghost: ask
- Carrd, Duda and BigCommerce: I'll point you at someone who builds on them
Website design for your trade: Who I
build for.
Some trades need the same site as everybody else. These ones do not, and the difference is worth a page of its own.
