Where is your site now?: Which one
sounds like yours?

Most Shopify work starts from one of these. Pick the closest and see what I would do.

Build it, buy it

Pick a size,
add the rest.

Every build price is days × £400 and no VAT is charged, so any number here can be checked. Nothing is paid when you order. A deposit, paid by card once you agree the written scope, starts the work. The balance is invoiced when it is finished, or paid monthly over up to 6 months at £400 a month or more.

1Pick a size

Every size includes the structure, design from a theme, build and handover. The search basics are in it too: a title and description written for every page, the sitemap submitted, and analytics connected. The extra below is the keyword research behind them.

3After launch

Once the site is live it has two running costs, paid to different people.

Hosting · paid to Shopify

From £19 a month for the Shopify plan the site runs on (plus card fees).

Shopify bills you for this directly, so it is not part of anything you pay me.

Looking after it · paid to me

Choose one. It is how changes and upkeep work once the site is live.

For a site that rarely needs changing. No monthly fee: ask when you need something and pay for the time it takes.

  • A price first for anything over an hour
  • Billed on the next invoice

Nothing to sign up to, and nothing to cancel.

For a site with a few changes most months.

4 hours × £75: three hours of changes, and one kept free for you, so you get a reply within 12 working hours.

  • Three hours of changes a month
  • A reply within 12 working hours

Three months minimum, then a month's notice to stop. Hours are for use that month and do not carry over.

For a site that changes all the time.

9 hours × £75: eight hours of changes, and one kept free for you, so you get a reply within 12 working hours.

  • Eight hours of changes a month
  • A monthly call about what is next
  • Room for a small new feature most months

Three months minimum, then a month's notice to stop. Hours are for use that month and do not carry over.

With a shop, each monthly plan is £37.50 a month more, and the prices above include it. Monthly plans are invoiced on the 1st, with no VAT charged. See maintenance plans.

Nearly there.
Who is it for?

Shop starter, ShopifyBuild £2,000

Shopify expert UK: is it the right call?: Right for a lot of sites,
wrong for some.

Shopify is the right answer when the website is mostly a shop: payments, stock and shipping in one place, and nothing to update. Every app added is another script on every page, which is where most slow stores come from.

Compare all four platforms
  • It fits when
  • Most of the site is products
  • You want payments, stock and shipping in one place
  • Nobody will look after updates
  • Something else fits when
  • You mainly publish content and sell a little. WordPress with a shop added
  • You sell bookings rather than products. Wix has them built in
  • You want to own every part of it. That is WordPress
Fewer apps,
faster store.

Reading on Shopify

Guides, if you would rather read first.

Before you ask: Shopify
questions.

If yours is not here, ask it on a call. Thirty minutes, and it is free.

01 Are you a Shopify expert agency?

An agency of one. A Shopify expert in the UK who builds the store, loads the products and hands it over, rather than a team where the person who sold it is not the person who builds it.

02 Can you move my store to Shopify?

Yes, and the products, variants and order history all have to land intact rather than just the pages. Moving a shop is a migration with more to check than a normal site, so it is priced as one.

03 What is a Shopify expert?

Shopify's own phrase for somebody who builds stores for other people. There is no exam behind it, so ask the ordinary questions instead. Here it is me, £400 a day, on your own Shopify account from the start.

04 Which Shopify plan do I need?

Basic, at £19 a month on annual billing, for most new stores. Online card fees are 2% + 25p on Basic and fall on the higher plans, so the plan is worth another look as sales grow.

05 Do you build custom themes?

The packages adapt an existing theme, which is quicker and easier to keep up to date. A custom theme is scoped by the day.

06 Who owns the store?

You do. The store is set up on your account, and the theme and apps are bought in your name.

07 Can you move our shop to Shopify?

Yes: products, customers and a redirect for every old URL. It is an extra, £800, or two days.

08 How long does it take?

A five page site is usually a few weeks from the written scope, and the scope gives you real dates rather than a range.

09 How do we pay?

Nothing is paid when you order. Once you agree the written scope, a deposit is invoiced and paid by card, and that starts the work. The balance is invoiced when the site is finished, or paid monthly by Direct Debit over up to six months at £400 a month or more. Monthly costs nothing extra: no interest, and no VAT charged.

10 What happens after launch?

You get the logins and a written guide to the everyday changes. Looking after it is optional: changes are £75 an hour, or a monthly plan if there will be a lot of them.

Shopify SEO: Built is one job.
Found is another.

A Shopify store built properly starts clean, and it still has to earn its rankings. Shopify is good at being a shop and opinionated about being a website. Some of what it does is fixed, some is theme, and some is an app somebody installed two years ago. Knowing which is most of the job.

The other platforms: Not sure Shopify
is the one?

The same work on the other three, priced the same way, and a custom build for the jobs none of the four can do. Pick the one that suits whoever will run the site.
