Concept work: Ouzel Dental.
Brand, mockup and site.

A dental practice in Newport Pagnell that doesn't exist, given what a real one would get from me: a brand, every page drawn first, a WordPress site, and a booking plugin written for it that really works. The practice is made up. The work is real, and all of it opens below.

The brief

A small NHS and private practice, for the people who have put the dentist off and finally look at 10.48pm.

Newport Pagnell, on the edge of Milton Keynes. The site’s one job is to turn that late look into a booked appointment: what happens, in order; the price before anything starts; and a way to stop at any point.

Customer 1

Somebody who has put it off

It has been a few years. They need to know what happens, what it costs, and that they can stop, and they need to book before the nerve goes.

Customer 2

A parent booking the family

NHS dental treatment is free for under-18s in England. They want times after school and everyone seen together.

Turned away

Not for

Emergencies when the practice is closed. The site says what to do instead: ring NHS 111.

Before and after: The same address,
the same day.

On the left, WordPress as the host installs it, with the practice's name typed in. On the right, the practice's site, deployed that evening. Drag the line to compare.

The Ouzel Dental home page: the river scene, the headline Nothing happens until you say so, and a Book online button
A fresh WordPress install: the default theme with one post, Hello world

What was made: Five things,
every one of them real.

Click the card in front to open it: the site in a new tab, the rest right here, every page. The review space stays empty for a concept, because there is nobody to ask.

01 / 05WordPress, with booking that works

Website

Built as a WordPress block theme from the mockup, with booking as a plugin of its own: the free times worked out from the opening hours, each time bookable once, and every booking listed for the practice in WordPress. It works at 11pm, and without JavaScript.

The site moves: the sky follows the visitor’s own clock, the first visit plays step by step until you raise a hand, and the fee prints like a ticket. It is hidden from Google on purpose, because the practice is not real.

  • 11pages, live
  • 12times a day, bookable
  • 5treatments, a page each

02 / 05Brand guidelines

Branding

Named after the River Ouzel, which meets the Great Ouse at Newport Pagnell under Tickford Bridge. The mark is a water ouzel, the old name for the dipper: a round river bird on a stone, with the river as a smile beneath it.

The bridge’s iron rings, shrinking towards the middle of the span, became the pattern: the dividers, the progress, and the arch every photograph sits in. Fraunces and Lexend won from twelve typefaces set side by side.

  • 12pages of guidelines
  • 6logo directions drawn
  • 2typefaces, from twelve

03 / 05Website mockup

Mockup

Every page drawn before any of it was built, at desktop and phone width, in WordPress’s own block markup, from the same theme file the site uses.

Written for somebody who has put the dentist off: what happens, in order; the price before you sit down; and a raised hand that stops everything.

  • 11pages drawn
  • 2widths, desktop and phone
  • 7moving parts

04 / 05A custom WordPress theme

Theme

Not a bought theme with a name typed into it: a block theme written for the practice, with its own name, version and cover in WordPress, so it is plainly theirs.

Pages open in the editor inside the theme, header and footer included, so changing a price or a line looks just like the page a visitor sees. No page builder sits in between, and there is no licence to renew.

  • 6templates, one per kind of page
  • 3parts, each edited once for every page
  • 0page builders, and nothing to renew

05 / 05A custom WordPress plugin

Plugin

Booking is a plugin written for the practice, not one bought off a shelf: the free times worked out from the opening hours, each time bookable once, and every booking in an Appointments screen in the practice’s own colours.

It is built to be careful with patients: every check runs on the server, nobody is emailed what they wrote, and each booking is deleted 30 days after its time. As a plugin, the bookings stay if the theme ever changes.

  • 1booking a time, held by the database
  • 30days, then deleted
  • 0patient details sent by email

Review

In the client's words

Nothing here yet, and for this one there never will be. Ouzel Dental is a concept, so there is no client to ask.

Client work gets its review in this space: their words, their name and their business, with a link to the site so you can check.

The booking plugin: One plugin,
two sides.

Written for this practice and installed like any other WordPress plugin. The patient books on the website, and the practice sees it straight away in WordPress, in its own colours. The bookings shown are made up.

The booking page: what the appointment is for, NHS or private, a day and a time, and the details

What a patient sees

Book online, at any hour

What it is for, NHS or private, a day, a time and a phone number. The times are worked out from the opening hours and checked as the page opens, so a time somebody has just taken cannot be picked.

The Appointments screen: the day’s times as rings, each booking with its notes, and buttons to confirm or cancel

What the practice sees

Appointments, in WordPress

Each day as a card, its times drawn as the bridge’s rings and filled where they are booked. What the patient wrote sits in pink, so “quite nervous” is the first thing reception reads. Confirm, cancel, or delete.

01

Times from the hours

Opening hours, appointment length and lunch set in one place. Nothing to keep up to date by hand.

02

One booking a time

The database itself refuses a second booking, however close together two people press Book.

03

Works without script

The days and times are ordinary choices on a form, so it books on any phone, with or without JavaScript.

04

Careful with patients

Every check on the server, no patient details by email, deleted after 30 days, and only staff can see it.

The services: The same work,
for a business that exists.

Three services went into this one. Each has its own page with its price on it, or how it is priced, so this is what it would be for you.

The decisions: Why it looks
the way it does.

A concept has to look like nothing of mine, so every choice was made from the practice's own story: a river, a bridge, and a bird that bobs on a stone.

Decision 1

Named after a river

Real practices in Newport Pagnell already use the bridge and the street on their own pages, so the name is the river that runs under them. Checked against Companies House and the web before any design.

Decision 2

A bird, not a bridge

The first mark was Tickford Bridge and its reflection, and drawn five ways it kept reading as a face or a box. Six directions were set side by side and the dipper won. The bridge stayed, as the pattern.

Decision 3

Blue near the old Twitter bird

Ouzel blue measures 2.89:1 on white, so it never carries words on a light ground. Ouse, deeper, is for everything you press, and Blush is kept for the one thing that says you are in control.

Decision 4

Nothing happens until you say so

The line, and the reason for every moving part: the visit plays until you raise a hand, the price is shown before you sit down, and booking works whenever you finally decide.

Built to a checklist: Six promises,
kept on one site.

My page for dental practices says what their website needs. This concept had to do every one of them, so it could sit on that page as the proof. This one stays out of Google on purpose. For a real practice, being found is the other half, and it has its own page: dental SEO.

  1. 01 Booking that works at 11pm A booking plugin, not a form: the free times from the opening hours, each one bookable once, and every booking in an Appointments screen in WordPress. It works at any hour, and without JavaScript.
  2. 02 A page per treatment Five treatment pages, each saying what it is, what happens step by step, how it feels, how long it takes and what it costs.
  3. 03 Fees, published The NHS bands quoted and dated, a price ticket on every treatment page, and a fee finder. Private fees are from-prices, made up for the concept until a real practice gives its own.
  4. 04 The clinicians, properly A team page by role, each in an arched frame where a real photograph goes, never a stock face, and no name or GDC number made up: the page says how to check one on the GDC’s register.
  5. 05 NHS and private, separated One switch, NHS or private, on the fee finder, and a fees page that answers the two side by side, with who gets NHS treatment free.
  6. 06 Claims kept inside the guidance No “pain-free”, no “best”, no before-and-afters. The whitening page quotes the GDC’s own rule on who may whiten.

What is real: A concept,
and plain about it.

Ouzel Dental says it is a concept on every page and on its booking form, is hidden from Google, and was checked against Companies House on 7 October 2026 so it cannot be mistaken for any real practice.

Made up

  • The practice and its team
  • Its private fees, from-prices a practice nearby might charge
  • The phone number, from Ofcom’s drama range, so it reaches nobody

Left out

  • Clinicians’ names, GDC numbers and photographs: the team goes by role
  • A company number and a CQC registration: the site says it has none
  • Reviews and ratings, and a street address

Real

  • The NHS charges, quoted and dated
  • NHS 111 and the A&E list, from the NHS
  • Tickford Bridge and the River Ouzel
  • The booking: it saves, and it is deleted after 30 days
