adamroe. Quarter Day

Concept work: Quarter Day.
Brand, then the redesign.

An accountancy firm for landlords that doesn't exist, with an old website that did: built badly on purpose, then redesigned the way a real one would be. A brand first, every old page decided, every new page drawn, a WordPress site, and every old address kept. The firm is made up. The work is real, and all of it opens below.

Concept·WordPress·Ten page·12 pages·October 2026

The brief

A small firm that does accounts and tax for landlords, with an old website that never said so, redesigned without losing anything it had.

Stony Stratford: self assessment, Making Tax Digital, property in a company, and what happens when one is sold. The firm already had a website, a bad one, so this is the first concept that is a redesign: the old site went live first, and was then replaced on the same address.

Comes first

A landlord who has just heard about Making Tax Digital

One or two rentals and a day job. They need to know whether it applies to them, from when, and what it costs to have somebody else do it.

Then

A landlord with a growing portfolio

Thinking about a company, a remortgage or a sale, and wanting somebody who does nothing but property.

Not for

Anybody else

Payroll for a shop, or the cheapest tax return in the country. The site says so, because a niche said outright is easier to find and easier to choose.

Before and after: From the firm's old site
to the one that replaced it.

On the left, the old site: made for this concept so there was something real to redesign, and live on this address until the relaunch on 8 October 2026. On the right, the site that replaced it, on the same address. Drag the line to compare.

The new Quarter Day home page: the headline Four quarters. No surprises. on canary yellow, beside three quarterly update slips
The old Quarter Day Accountants site: a blue template, a clip-art calculator, and the heading Welcome to our website

What was made: Four things,
every one of them real.

Click the card in front to open it: the site in a new tab, the rest right here, every page. The review space stays empty for a concept, because there is nobody to ask.

Quarter Day

Concept Accountants for landlords, Stony StratfordOctober 2026

01 / 04WordPress, a redesign

Website

Built as a WordPress block theme from the mockup, to replace the firm’s old site on the same address. Every old page was decided before any design, and every old address now redirects to its new page.

The firm does landlords and nothing else now, and the site says so in its first line. Its most useful part answers the question a landlord arrives with: does Making Tax Digital apply to me, and from when. It is hidden from Google on purpose.

  • 12pages, live
  • 6old addresses, each redirected
  • 0HTML blocks: every word editable

02 / 04Brand guidelines

Branding

The four quarter days were when rents fell due, and Making Tax Digital now asks landlords for an update every quarter. The mark is a Q cut into those four quarters, coloured clockwise from 6 April.

The look is a duplicate book: canary, pink and blue copies, perforated slips, and a rubber stamp when a thing is done. Rozha One for headlines, won from twelve faces, beside Hanken Grotesk, whose figures line up in columns.

  • 13pages of guidelines
  • 6logo directions drawn
  • 12headline faces tried

03 / 04Website mockup

Mockup

Every page of the new site drawn before any of it was built, at desktop and phone width, in WordPress’s own block markup, from a content plan agreed before the drawing started.

Each tax fact was checked on GOV.UK as it was written, and the page that states it links the page it came from.

  • 12pages drawn
  • 2widths, desktop and phone
  • 6old pages decided first

04 / 04A custom WordPress theme

Theme

Not a bought theme with a name typed into it: a block theme written for the firm, with its own name, version and cover in WordPress, so it is plainly theirs.

Pages open in the editor inside the theme, header and footer included, so changing a price or a line looks just like the page a visitor sees. No page builder sits in between, and there is no licence to renew.

  • 4templates, one per kind of page
  • 3parts, each edited once for every page
  • 0page builders, and nothing to renew

Review

In the client's words

Nothing here yet, and for this one there never will be. Quarter Day is a concept, so there is no client to ask.

Client work gets its review in this space: their words, their name and their business, with a link to the site so you can check.

The redesign: Six old pages,
every one decided.

Written down and agreed before any design, as my redesign page says it must be. Each old address now answers with a 301 to its new page, checked against the live site after the relaunch.

  1. /index.php / Rewrite “Welcome to our website” said nothing. The new home says who the firm is for, and answers the Making Tax Digital question first.
  2. /about-us.php /about/ Rewrite The mission statement went. Who the firm is for stayed, with what a real firm shows so it can be trusted.
  3. /services.php /services/ Split Its one useful line, rental income, became the whole firm: four service pages. The other eleven services went.
  4. /news.php /guides/ Rewrite News last touched in 2019 became guides timed to the year’s deadlines.
  5. /links.php /guides/ Merge A list of four GOV.UK links helped nobody. Each guide now links the GOV.UK pages it quotes.
  6. /contact-us.php /contact/ Keep Still needed. Its form became Book a call.

The services: The same work,
for a business that exists.

Three services went into this one. Each has its own page with its price on it, or how it is priced, so this is what it would be for you.

The decisions: Why it looks
the way it does.

A concept has to look like nothing of mine, so every choice was made from the firm's own story: the old rent days, the quarterly updates, and the paperwork a landlord already keeps.

Decision 1

Named for the rent days

The quarter days were when rents fell due, and the tax year starts on 6 April because of one of them. Checked against Companies House and the web first: no accountancy uses the name.

Decision 2

One niche, said outright

The old site listed twelve services and mentioned landlords once, near the bottom. The new one does landlords and nothing else, which is the argument of my page for accountants: a niche beats a town.

Decision 3

A duplicate book

Canary, pink and blue copies, and a stamp when a thing is done: paperwork a landlord already keeps. Chosen from three directions, after a first set of guidelines looked too much like the other concepts.

Decision 4

Figures that line up

Hanken Grotesk sets every figure, because its numbers are all one width and sit in columns. Rozha One’s do not, so it sets headlines and never a fee.

Built to a checklist: Six steps,
on one redesign.

My page on redesigns says what one has to do. This concept took every step it could, so it could sit on that page as the proof; the first needs a site with visitors, and a made-up one has none. The niche is the argument of SEO for accountants; this site stays out of Google on purpose, so it shows the shape rather than the rankings.

  1. 01 What the old site is already earning Nothing, honestly: the old site was made for the concept, so it had no visitors to measure. What could be listed was: six pages, every address, twelve services and news last touched in 2019. On a real site this step is measured.
  2. 02 What is worth keeping A decision for each of the six old pages, written down and agreed before any design: three rewritten, one split into four service pages, one merged and one kept.
  3. 03 The design Drawn around the content that stayed, and only after the brand. The old site had none, so the brand was its own job and came first.
  4. 04 Built on what suits your team WordPress, every page in core blocks and opening in the editor inside its own template, so a fee or a date can be changed without ringing anybody.
  5. 05 Addresses and rankings kept All six old addresses mapped before launch and answered with a 301, from a must-use plugin so they survive a change of theme, then checked against the live site.
  6. 06 Launch and handover Relaunched on the old site’s address on 8 October 2026: the old pages moved aside rather than deleted, and every new page and old address checked live.

What is real: A concept,
and plain about it.

Quarter Day says it is a concept on every page, sends anybody with a tax question to GOV.UK, is hidden from Google, and was checked against Companies House and the web on 8 October 2026 so it cannot be mistaken for any real firm.

Made up

  • The firm, its four people and its history
  • Its fees, at what a small firm for landlords might charge, and the fees page says so
  • The old site: made for the concept, so there was something real to redesign
  • The phone number, from Ofcom’s drama range, so it reaches nobody

Left out

  • A company number and a data protection registration: the site says it has none
  • Any professional body, supervisor or insurer named as the firm’s
  • A street address, and anybody’s name
  • Tax advice: every page sends you to GOV.UK for your own position

Real

  • Every tax fact, checked on GOV.UK and linked from the page that states it
  • The six redirects, checked against the live site after the relaunch
  • The Making Tax Digital check: it works in the browser and sends nothing
  • The old site’s pages, moved aside on the server, never deleted
